Technology That Made The Refrigerator Possible
The first refrigerator was invented in 1834, by Jacob Perkins. This man invented the refrigerator, not only with his ideas, but he used the ideas of other inventors, by looking at the issues and flaws and wonderful ideas of their creations, and made them even better. he did so, by noticing the issues and great ideas of the ice box,(invented by Thomas Moore) and thought of how he could manage the amount of money people spent on ice, and maybe even get rid of the idea of using ice to cool preservable goods all together. The ice box made the invention of the refrigerator a hit and now a great necessity for most all people today.
The Invention of Freon
With the earliest inventions of the refrigerator, came dangerous effects of them. Early refrigeration methods used toxic gases such as ammonia, sulfer dioxide, and methyl chloride. Sometimes the gases would leak, and lead to fatal accidents in the early 1900's. Manufacturers realized that they needed a better cooling method. Which led to the discovery of synthetic refrigerants called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Also known as Freon. Freon became the worldwide used refrigerant for decades after it was discovered.
The Refrigeration Process
Mechanical cooling systems depend on chemicals called refrigerants. As the refrigerant moves through the refrigerator, it is compressed, and raises its temperature. The heat is released through the back of the refrigerator; as it is dissipated, the refrigerant condenses but stays at that high pressure. It than moves through an expansion valve, where the pressure drops and turns back into a gas. as The refrigerant turns from liquid to gas, its temperature drops, cooling the air, as fans and motors circulate it throughout the refrigerators insulated area.
